This year represents a major milestone in our local ACLU history and we mark this event with a dinner that recognizes the important contributions made by three titans of our Affiliate who have recently passed:

  • David Isbell, an original founder
  • Frank Kameny, an original founder and early advocate of civil liberties for Gay Rights
  • Ralph Temple, one of our first volunteer attorneys, later our first legal director and then interim Executive Director

It is also a watershed moment for us: after a decade of major accomplishments on behalf of our Affiliate we bid “farewell” to our outgoing Executive Director, Johnny Barnes.

We come together at this Dinner then to celebrate the past, present and future of the ACLU of the Nation’s Capital along with its accomplishments and work in alleviating preventive detention and police misconduct, employment discrimination and censorship, as well as the promotion of academic freedom, church-state separation, first amendment rights and overall defense of civil rights that involve infringement of civil liberties.

Also at this Dinner we take great pride in honoring two award-winning journalists with the Henry W. Edgerton Civil Liberties Award: Jane Mayer, for her ground-breaking reporting on the War on Terror and all the civil liberties violations it entailed and Jose-Antonio Vargas, who courageously challenged our notions of how we define an “American.”

The Alan and Adrienne Barth Service Award, given to recognize significant volunteer contributions to the ACLU, will be presented to Dolores Harris and Rodney Haugh, longtime ACLU activists and ACLU-NCA Legal Intake Volunteers.

Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, Linda Greenhouse, whose work exemplifies the dialogue necessary to ensure a free and open marketplace of ideas, will deliver the keynote address.

The Dinner, which is an annual event, serves as our only major fundraising event during the year and celebrates old friends, new colleagues and the freedoms we hold dear. With this particular dinner, we hope to secure at least another fifty years of service in the protection and expansion of civil liberties on behalf of everyone. With continued spying on citizens and restrictions on vital Bill of Rights freedoms transcending the bounds of law and our most treasured values in the name of national security, the work of the ACLU is as essential today as ever before. The ACLU has received wide praise for its dauntless defense of civil liberties during this time of struggle, even from frequent critics. OUR WORK DEPENDS ON YOU. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR DINNER!
