Undergraduate and High School Internships
September 04, 2010About Undergraduate and High School Internships
Our Staff: We have 7 full-time staff, of which 3 are pro-bono staff attorneys. We also have a complement of 10 permanent volunteers and high school and/or undergraduate interns who work on the legislative and lobbying efforts of the organization. Our local Affiliate has more than 5,000 active members and the ACLU has over 500,000 members nationwide. We are centrally located, off Dupont Circle, easily accessible by the red line.
General Intern Activity: Our organization holds community education and lobbying events; fund-raising events and runs fund-raising campaigns throughout the year. The interns would assist in the development and execution of these various events and campaigns according to their background, knowledge and experience. The main pre-requisite for any internship are computer skills (i.e., Access, Excel, Desktop Publishing, Power point).
Our aim is to allow students to exercise creativity, develop organizational and strategic planning skills and project development and management skills, along with the social skills that accompany their exposure to local and national celebrities and notables. The interns will be invited to join in the events that occur during their internship and will be invited back to participate in events once their internships have ended
Note that only law students get to work on legal cases and do legal research. Having said that, high school and undergraduate internships involve some "general legal" research and legal intake (20%); some legislative and grassroots lobbying activities and research (30%); special project work (30%); and administrative/general office work (20%).
Application Process: We accept intern applications year-round, with rolling acceptances for Fall, Spring and Summer. If you are interested in an internship with us, please send the following information to felicia@aclu-nca.org:
