Undergraduate and High School Internships

We have 7 full-time staff, of which 3 are pro-bono staff attorneys. We also have a complement of 10 permanent volunteers and high school and/or undergraduate interns who work on the legislative and lobbying efforts of the organization. Our local Affiliate has more than 5,000 active members and the ACLU has over 500,000 members nationwide. We are centrally located, off Dupont Circle, easily accessible by the red line.

Steve Block Retiring as Legislative Director of ACLU-NCA - Replacement Sought

Steve Block For more than seventeen years, Steve has been monitoring the work of the D.C. Council and testifying and lobbying on our behalf. Now he says “it’s time for me to hang up my shingle.” Asked to reflect on his career, Steve stated that he has been especially gratified when ACLU initiatives were enacted into law, such as the recently passed revision of the District’s archaic disorderly conduct statutes. He adds that he is especially proud of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance’s Distinguished Service Award for his work in preventing the enactment of a sex offender registry law (Megan’s Law) that would have discriminated against the LGBT community.

The First Amendment Project: Volunteers Needed

Revelations that America’s young people could name five characters from The Simpsons television show, yet could not state the five freedoms of the First Amendment, should concern all of us. A recent article by Nat Hentoff alarmingly reports, “…in a national study last year, more than 100,000 high school students were interviewed on what they know of the first amendment. Seventy-three percent either had no opinion or took the First Amendment for granted, whatever that may mean. More than a third believed that the First Amendment goes too far in its guarantees.

Make a difference, join the ACLU Future Leadership Council!

If you are interested in civil liberties for youth and young aduts, you are welcome to join our ACLU-NCA Future Leadership Council (an organization made up of committed youth and ACLU club representative from various high schools, undergraduate college campuses and law schools) and help shape the future of civil liberties. The Council has a vote on the local ACLU board and meets about 4 times during the academic year.
